The calabar carnival: the tourist delight!

In the middle of the ever green rain forest of Africa, the city of Calabar comes aglow once again,as the annual calabar carnival celebration gets to it's climax. This carnival which has attracted the worlds attention, within its relatively short lifespan is a delight to fun-seekers and tourist.

Calabar the city that has a beautiful landscape and unique history dating back to the pre-colonial era was once the seat of power in Nigeria, and also home to Mary Slessor a missionary from Europe in the 19th century who helped to abolish the killing of twins in this part of the world, which was then a taboo.

Calabar also boasts of a world class holiday tourist resort, "the obudu cattle ranch" which has the longest cable car ride in the world. The city also hosts an annual mountain race, which boasts of the highest price money of $50,000!!! for athletes in the world. She also accomodates a free trade zone "The Tinapa Resort" an emerging commercial/trading capital in the world, like Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The carnival train consists of both the young and old in the city, beautiful women, healthy and viral young men all gyrating through the streets of calarbar. The mamooth crowd move in bands, each being led by a band leader, all members of the band sing and dance in rythm to the drums, whose beats are similar to the peculiar traditional African folklore story telling style. Africans in diaspora feel the rythm as it heals their soul, which draws them closer to their roots.

The costume of each band member is carefully crafted, and is a delight to the eyes, the blend of the costume characters and the landmark models, gives depth, colour, radiance and variety to the carnival.

For visitors/tourist that are curious in knowing about the cultural heritage of the people of calabar, would be thrilled by the trado-cultural groups that brace the carnival. The theme of each band exhibits freedom, equality, valour and grace, all yearnings and attributes of the African spirit, inherent in the people.

The carnival is heightened by its cultural content, trado originality, beautiful colour blend that excites the imagination and propel the spirit! The calabar carnival December 2008, is a must-attend for the tourist whose goal is to experience the unimaginable!!! Click Here!
